Using Canvas Assignments to Share Content With A Specific Student Audience

Summary of process:

  1. Create assignment
  2. Include assignment details
  3. Modify assignment settings

*This process references steps in https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-assign-an-assignment-to-an-individual-student/ta-p/717

I. Creating the assignment:

  1. Go to the assignments page on your canvas course.
  2. Select “+ Assignment”

        3. Name the assignment

  1. Ex: Module 3 videos – Smith, Jane

II. Modify assignments settings:

  1. Select the “Do not count this assignment towards the final grade” box.

        2. Change the “Display grade as” to “Not Graded”.

        3. In the “Assign to box”, delete the “everyone” tab.

        4. Search for the student that will be viewing the assignment and add them to the assignment.

        5. Ensure that the due date and availability dates are to your liking for the student.

Here is how the assignment settings should look. This format makes sure that the assignment does not count towards the students’ grade and is only visible to them. In this example, Jane Smith would be the only student able to view the assignment from September 20, 2021 to September 24, 2021.

III. Include assignment details:

  1. Add in student specific content: Videos, Kaltura, images, documents…
    1. Use the embed button, or copy links and paste them into the assignment details box
